gamesread | Get Familiar With Dark and Light’s Advanced Weather System

Dark and Light's (DNL) weather and day/night cycle influences the gameplay and environment, improving on the already highly developed weather systems found in many sandbox games.

Daylight lasts about 50 minutes in real time and is ideal time for exploring far and wide. Hunting is safest during daylight hours as many creatures are less aggressive, and players are less susceptible to surprise attacks. Of course, on a clear day with no rain, players will be able to enjoy miles of visibility from high altitudes, and can experience breathtaking views of Dark and Light's expansive scenery.

gamesread | Get Familiar With Dark and Light’s Advanced Weather System
Dark and Light's world becomes increasingly dangerous as night falls. Plenty of menacing creatures imbued with dark magic lurk in the forests at night, and some creatures become incredibly aggressive when the sun has set.

Weather also has an effect on your survival stats. On rainy days, exploration is harder because players will get cold more quickly, and will also get hungry more frequently. Rainy days will keep you more hydrated, however. Players who are planning to explore and roam long distances will need to equip themselves accordingly based on conditions in the field.

Dark and Light puts players in an immersive fantasy world that is filled with magic, monsters, and mystery. In this world, they will be challenged to survive and thrive through a combination of crafting, exploration, and powerful magic.

New Wrathwings: Pegasus
Pegasus is a name that can be heard in the greatest legends. Many gods and heroes alike have performed their legendary deeds while riding atop this majestic winged horse. With its unparalleled grace and speed, Pegasus can soar through the battlefield with invincibility. However, to earn the favor of Pegasus, a champion has to be truly blessed by the gods and destined for greatness. To borrow the power of Pegasus, humanity crafted the Pegasus Wrathwings using a single feather from the divine steed. That alone was enough to grant unimaginable power and speed to the Wing’s wearer. Many Guardians seek to obtain the Pegasus Wrathwings in order to scribe their own names among the legends of Aurora.

New Pet: CL3-Ver.1
No one knows who created this strange machine or for what purpose it was made. Its only marking is a serial code that reads "CL3-Ver.1", which led to its nickname, Clever. Unique from other machines, a forbidden magic seems to have been used during its creation to allow Clever to think and talk like a sentient being. Not only that, Clever seems to have developed a mischievous personality, perhaps inherited from its creator. Clever possesses a powerful electromagnetic weapon hidden inside its frame. When threatened, Clever can extend an internal antenna that harnesses the electrons in the air to charge and fire off a powerful electro wave at enemies.

gamesread | Albion Development Recap (December 2)

This time around in the Development Recap, our Game Director Robin Henkys takes a look back at the Faye update and addresses some concerns of the community.

Why don’t you have a listen at what he has to say?

No time to watch the video? Here is a brief summary of what Robin discussed:

Guards and Guard Towers

The new Guard Towers are one of the more heavily discussed features of Faye. Some of you asked: why would you add more restrictions to a full-loot sandbox PvP game?

Before we added Guard Towers, city camping was a far too safe and passive PvP activity. There would be little to no risk involved, as it simply involved waiting for victims and running to safety when outplayed. The addition of Guard Towers will make these so-called city gate campers think twice about their activities, as there is now a considerable risk in play.

Persistent Mounts and Mount Balancing

The Persistent Mount system has been added to support gatherers, and was generally well-received. However, we also changed the way mounts’ health works by completely separating it from the rider’s health pool. This was a very important change to us, as it now allows people who get caught on a mount to fight back at full strength and makes the risk of going into the open world more reasonable.

This change obviously has a huge impact on the fight or flight balancing in Albion, which is exactly what we wanted to achieve. It is important to note that this will not be the last change made to the fight or flight balancing, as we will continue to keep an eye on it and assure it works for both the ganking as non-PvP community.

Essences

Similar to the Guard Towers, the addition of Essences also caused for some raised eyebrows amongst the community.

Essences were added as a part of an ongoing effort to improve PvE, as mentioned in our previous Development Recap. They are not the most exciting content, but perfectly serve their job of tying PvE to the game’s economy. We have balanced the drop rate in such a way that they will not be too expensive or taxing on the crafting community, however we are monitoring the markets at all time and will make improvements if necessary.

Runes, Souls and Relics

Changing the three Artifact fragments to Runes, Souls and Relics might seem like an insignificant change, but it is actually a preparation for the next major content update. We are planning to allow enchanting with Runes, Souls and Relics, giving them a secondary purpose and making them viable even to players who are not interested in artifact equipment.

Royal Guild vs. Guild

The comeback of Guild vs. Guild to yellow and red zones had been requested since the start of Final Beta, and now it is finally here! We opted to only include Watch Tower territories in these zones, and leave Home Territories as an Outlands-exclusive. The reasoning behind this decision is that Home Territories would contradict the reputation system on the Royal Continent by creating a safe space for criminals and thus remove any consequences of their criminal behavior.

As yellow and red zones only have Watch Towers, we had to make them worth the effort! This is why we introduced the resource and gathering benefits. In the end, how much you can get out of your Watch Tower depends on your own activity! We do keep track of all your feedback and will continue to balance out the effort and reward balance.

We are also looking into making cityfights the center point of royal GvG. This is not an easy task and will be very time-consuming, but you can look forward to changes to cities in future updates!

What is your opinion on Faye? What would you like Robin to address in the next Development Recap? Let us know in the comments below or on our forums!

gamesread – Albion Development Recap (December 16)

In our third Development Recap, we have another look at what the future holds for Albion as Robin Henkys delves deeper into future world changes and design goals.

Make sure you do not miss out, watch the video here:

Cannot watch the video right now? Here is a brief rundown by going over our three main goals:

  • a believable world
  • a meaningful world
  • a strategically designed world

A Believable World

First of all, it is important to make the world of Albion an immersive and believable world, one you can get lost in. Right now, this is not the case, as our world is very much like a grid or chessboard. We did not intend the world to be like this, but due to time constraints, it had to be created this way.

As we are getting ready to implement the new world, we are first of all de-gridding the world, making it more natural. This includes several unique regions with defining landmarks such as lakes or mountain ranges. We will also introduce biome-based cities, each city having a unique layout and being different from the other.

Aside from those changes, the world map is also being revamped. For example, we will add a better zoom option, allowing you to zoom out further and have better access to relevant information.

A Meaningful World

Of course, the world of Albion should be more than just eye-candy, which is where our second goal comes into play: creating a diverse and meaningful world.

Compared to the first Beta phase, we already improved on this goal by adding five different biomes, each with their own set of resources. There are still more special features to come, such as:

  • Rare mob camps with their own loot chests.
  • Resource hotspots with Guardians to protect them.
  • Altars, which are the place to be for essence farming:
  • Dedicated faction raid zones in the form of home bases.
  • Passages between regions, providing a faster but also more dangerous route.

On top of working on this new content, it is important to note that we are continuously improving our level design tools, which allows us to make sure individual zones continue to become more unique and of better quality.

A Strategically Designed World

Gathering everything we have learned from the current and previous tests, we are redesigning both the Royal Continent and the Outlands.

The Royal Continent

The Royal Continent is not only the entry point for new players to the world of Albion, but also the economic backbone of the world. It is the home to the more peacefully-minded players, who enjoy the economic side of the game, and the place for small-scale PvP.

Keeping all this in mind, we have scrapped the current two Royal Isles and created a new continent with a circular design, where zones get more dangerous the closer to the center you get. There will be one central city, right in the middle of the continent, with five cities in the outlying zones (one city per biome). Trading between cities is encouraged, and it is up to you to pick the route of your choice: do you take the long way round and stay in the safe zones, or do you take the fast but dangerous route through the center of the land?

Additionally, we will make yellow and red zones more concentrated in the Royal Continent, ensuring there will be constant opportunities for small-scale PvP.

The Outlands

In contrast to the Royal Continent, the Outlands are the natural habitat of competitive and well-organized guilds. To ensure they remain attractive for guilds, we will make sure the black zone continent of Albion has the following features:

  • Plenty of PvP hotspots, making sure there are always valuable PvP objectives to fight over.
  • Adjusted time zones, ensuring players of the same region fight over the same objectives.
  • Sub-regions (low, mid and high-end) to encourage guilds of the same skill to fight each other and settle close to each other.
  • Center regions with valuable loot that cannot be controlled by guilds (no territory or watch towers).

For more information on the new Outlands, click here.

We are very excited about these upcoming world changes and cannot wait to introduce the new world to you in the Galahad update, coming in the first quarter of 2017! Make sure to let us know your feedback and general thoughts in the comments below.
